We bought a house with period windows and very draughty windows. Having spent some time thinking about replacing our sash windows at least putting a protective film on, we thought we were looking at a huge investment (we are in a Grade 2 listed Georgian Townhouse) Then my Husband found a new way to solve the cold and a couple of other things.
I thought I knew a fair bit about old properties but I did not know the extent to which windows can be modified and protected. We found ECODRAFT who provided draft proofing which is a cheaper way to improve heat loss. The thing that clinched it for us was the quote from the English Heritage website
'About one-fifth of a homes heating is lost through windows. Most of that escapes through air gaps rather than through the glass. Research has shown that air infiltration through a sash window in good condition can be reduced by as much as 86% by adding draft proofing'
So went went ahead with ECODRAFT and added the virtually invisible draft proofing which sits behind a piece of timber beading inside the frame. The window looks lovely, and it has made the place so much warmer.
Another hidden benefit of the draft proofing is it takes away the rattling sound. Theres something that niggles at you when the window rattles. Its saying to you 'your in a money pit '... but thankfully that has all now gone.
I highly recommend that you look into this if you are in the same situation or just feel your home is so cold and costs so much to heat.
